Welcome to Flatlander Labradors

We Take Health Seriously!

At Flatlander Labradors we take the health and longevity of our dogs seriously. We want our dogs and puppies to live long healthy happy lives with their families. We understand vet bills are costly, and so we do genetic testing and extensive health examinations of our breeding stock to eliminate preventable diseases from our lines so that you, the owner, can worry about which fun activity you will be doing next, not the next vet visit.

All puppies come with their first vaccination (and more if they are older), have been dewormed, microchipped and examined tip to tail by a veterinarian.  Hearts and eyes are examined in all breeding stock and hips and elbows tested and certified by OFA. We genetically test parents for EIC, PRA, DM and CNM along with a host of other diseases (255 genetic markers to be exact). These diseases are debilitating and horrible, if you want to see how tragic they can be, YouTube them. But warning, you may cry about how tragic these diseases are, that’s why we ALWAYS test to prevent them.

What are we about?

Health

Our breeding stock is screened genetically and health tested prior to breeding. Anyone who doesn't meet our standard is eliminated from the breeding side and placed in a pet home.

Soundness

Did you know the most common reason for labradors to be euthanized is mobility issues. In this regard we are very selective in the soundness and athleticism of our dogs.

Temperament

Kindness, lovability and intelligence. We want a dog that is your companion while you are out and active but also lays at your feet at night. A dog that is trainable with an 'off' switch is what we strive for.

How do you raise your puppies?

7 before 7 rule

To ensure our dogs develop mentally and physically to the best of their abilities we believe in the 7 before 7 method. This method includes exposure to different elements such as footing, food, play and touch. For example we provide puppies with 7 different surfaces to walk on before the age of 7 weeks. If we find a particular puppy has an issue with a surface, we help them develop confidence so that by the time they go home there is no issue at all. Food is another area that we expose the puppies to, they are fed 7 different protein sources before they go home to ensure their tiny bodies have been exposed to prevent sensitivities and allergies.

Do I get to pick my puppy?

We like to get to know all of our potential puppy buyers and take into consideration their wishes but Mother Nature loves to throw curve balls. Sometimes what is born isn't what was hoped for. We can't control gender or always colour. We are pretty good at predictions but breeding is all random. Because we spend so much time with the puppies we also get to know them well and can best match personalities with lifestyles. We make strong recommendations when you come to meet the puppies with which one we think will fit your family best!

Can I return my puppy?

ALWAYS FOR ANY CIRCUMSTANCE NO QUESTIONS ASKED. We feel responsible for every dog we breed. We also understand life changes and is unpredictable. We NEVER want any of our dogs in a shelter/pound or rescue. That is why we always stay the secondary contact on the microchips so that our puppies can always find their way back to us if need be. We would hope that people feel comfortable enough to have that difficult discussion with us before ever considering rehoming their dog. We will do everything we can to help!

We bought our first Flatlander Labrador almost 2 decades ago. Now we have 2 more. They are part of our family, they are everything we wanted in a pet and more. It is instant love when you meet your puppy and the joy and laughs through the years are priceless

I got my puppy while searching for a dog I could self train for my personal therapy dog. I didn't know what I was doing and through our training together she (my dog) made it so easy and now we are certified. She saved my life and I can't be more thankful.

We just wanted a pet, we wanted something for our kids to grow up with. Flatlander Labradors picked the perfect puppy for our family. Angus is now 7 and has been an amazing addition to our family. We will be looking forward to adding another Flatlander puppy to our life in the next few years.

Our dogs don’t just go through rigorous health testing, they are also put through constant behaviour evaluations and examinations. Only the best dogs get to pass on their genes and make babies. Our breeding dogs are part of our family, they sleep in our rooms, they cuddle with us on the couch and they eat from our hands. We want a dog that can work all day if you need them too, but lay at your feet and just enjoy your company as well
